Ski Rental: The Host's Checklist, From One Week Before to Check-Out (+ a Winter Driving Rules Message Template)

In short

  • Winter equipment: in France, from November 1 to March 31, winter tyres or snow chains/snow socks are mandatory in certain towns across 34 mountain departments. Let your guests know.
  • The key moment: arrival, often at night and in the cold.
  • The 3 essential signs: welcome, winter house rules, resort information.
  • What guests rate most: how warm the home is, where to store equipment, how clear the information is.

A ski rental isn't managed like a summer rental. Guests arrive after hours on snowy roads, with skis, wet boots and tired children. Here's the host's checklist, moment by moment.

One week before: the message that prevents trouble

Since winter 2021, France's Mountain Law (loi Montagne) has required winter equipment in certain mountain towns from November 1 to March 31: four tyres marked “3PMSF” (the mountain and snowflake symbol), or snow chains or snow socks in the boot. Signs mark the entry and exit of the areas concerned. Many guests, especially those renting a car or coming from abroad, are unaware of it.

Message template to copy:

Hello, we look forward to welcoming you! Quick reminder: from November 1 to March 31, winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory on the road to the resort. Parking is at [place], the key is [place]. The heating will be on before you arrive. Safe travels!

Bonne route !

The day before: preparing the home

  • Set the heating to come on a few hours before arrival.
  • Clear the snow (or have it cleared) from the access and the parking space.
  • Leave an outdoor light on: at night, under the snow, all chalets look alike.
  • Check the firewood for the fireplace or stove, and the batteries in the smoke detectors.

Arrival: the first three minutes

This is where the review is decided. Three things should stand out:

  1. A welcome sign at the entrance: the “Welcome to the Chalet” poster, in a wooden frame, immediately says “we were expecting you”, in a language everyone understands.
  2. An obvious equipment corner: absorbent mat, bench, hooks for ski suits, a boot dryer if possible, and a “Skis here” label.
  3. A hot drink: tea, hot chocolate powder and a tin of biscuits on the table.

During the stay: the information that saves phone calls

Gather on two or three signs everything guests would otherwise ask you by message:

  • Heating and fireplace: how to adjust the radiators, light the stove, where to find the wood.
  • Resort: lift times, shuttle stop, equipment hire, ski school, doctor, on-call pharmacy, mountain rescue number.
  • Winter house rules: no ski boots in the bedrooms, windows closed when the heating is on, no snow in the hallway.

The 5-poster welcome kit includes spaces for the Wi-Fi, instructions and useful numbers. For the full list of rules, see our article on house rules for a vacation rental.

The atmosphere: what ends up in the photos

Throws, wool cushions, soft light and two or three winter posters are enough to turn a decent home into one people photograph.

Check-out: ending on a high note

  • A clear check-out sign: departure time, where to leave the key, what to do with linen and bins, switching off the stove.
  • A little thank-you note with a link to your review page.

Frequently asked questions

Are winter tyres mandatory to go skiing in France?

In the mountain towns covered by the Mountain Law, from November 1 to March 31, you need either four winter tyres marked 3PMSF or snow chains or snow socks in the vehicle. Signs indicate the areas concerned.

What should go in a chalet welcome book?

Check-in and check-out, Wi-Fi, heating and fireplace, house rules, resort information (lifts, shuttle, equipment hire) and emergency numbers.

Do you need signs in English in a chalet?

In the big resorts, a large share of guests come from abroad. Bilingual English-French signs prevent misunderstandings.

How can I make a ski rental feel warmer?

Heat the home before arrival, leave a light on, provide a hot drink, throws and two or three winter posters.

Final word

A successful ski holiday starts long before the slopes: with a clear message a week before, a warm home on arrival and information guests can find without having to call you. These details, far more than the view, are what earn five-star reviews. Prepare your signs now, before the first guests of the season arrive.
